Protect your ankles this sports season!

Over the past 20 years Jannali Physiotherapy has treated many people from a wide range of sporting backgrounds for ankle injuries, in particular lateral ankle sprains!

The most common ankle sprain is of the lateral or outside part of the ankle. There are three lateral ligaments that attach the lower leg to the foot, the Anterior Talofibular ligament (ATFL), Calcaneofibular ligament (CFL), and Posterior talofibular ligament (PTFL). These three ligaments are often injured or torn in a lateral ankle sprain.

A lateral ankle sprain happens when the foot rolls inwards stretching the lateral ligaments. This is very common in sports such as footy, soccer, basketball, netball etc. when a player lands on another player’s shoe or someone steps on uneven ground.

A number of strategies can be used to help treat and prevent lateral ankle sprains. Pop in and see the guys at Jannali Physiotherapy for a pre-season assessment to find what strategy will work best for you in avoiding this nasty injury and keeping your ankles strong this sporting season!
